CloudWave Renews Partnership with the FDA to Share Threat Intelligence for Medical Device Security

Organizations Partner to Foster Collaboration and Communication to Proactively Mitigate Cybersecurity Threats in the Healthcare and Public Health Sector

Marlborough, MA (April 9, 2024) – CloudWave, the expert in healthcare data security, today announced the renewal of its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The MOU allows CloudWave and the FDA to share critical threat intelligence in the case of nationwide suspected threats to medical device security. It extends the partnership between the organizations to foster an environment that encourages collaboration and communication in addressing cybersecurity risks that may affect the safety, effectiveness, and security of medical devices and the integrity and security of the surrounding healthcare IT infrastructure.

CloudWave’s Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO) is focused on exchanging cybersecurity threat intelligence, best practices, toolkits, and more across its member base and interested parties in the United States. The FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH)—which is responsible for assuring that patients and providers have timely and continued access to safe, effective, and high-quality medical devices—is working with partners like CloudWave to reduce risks to public health by enabling the rapid sharing of medical device vulnerabilities, threats, and mitigations within the hospital and healthcare ecosystem.

The partnership between CloudWave’s Sensato Cybersecurity team and the FDA began in 2016, with a goal to move quickly and minimize bureaucracy to better address medical device cybersecurity. The team developed a vendor assessment framework, a cybersecurity medical device policy, and other best practices and approaches for organizational members interested in safeguarding patient lives.

“More than ever before, medical devices are being targeted, and we are focused on developing innovative strategies to assess and mitigate cybersecurity threats,” said John Gomez, Chief Engineering & Security Officer at CloudWave. “By proactively sharing information regarding cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the healthcare and public health sector, we can gain the timely situational awareness needed to reduce the attack surface and take appropriate measures to help protect patient safety.”

This partnership with the FDA to advance education and critical intelligence in the healthcare industry aligns with CloudWave’s mission of proactive, comprehensive cybersecurity protection for healthcare. CloudWave provides a unique level of security by enabling hospitals to implement a fully managed cybersecurity program, resulting in complete HIPAA and NIST compliance, with end-to-end service and support from a single provider.

The company’s Sensato Cybersecurity suite combines the ability to comply with best practices and regulations, detect threats, and respond to cybersecurity incidents in a fully integrated and easy-to-deploy holistic platform. Furthermore, CloudWave’s OpSus managed cloud services are built to meet or exceed all healthcare security and compliance requirements. Blending cybersecurity and cloud service delivery operations into a single extended healthcare ecosystem, spanning public cloud, private cloud, and on-premises healthcare technology environments, is unprecedented and provides customers with a seamless, enhanced experience.

CloudWave also recently launched its Cybersecurity Insider Program, an exclusive community dedicated to protecting patients at the intersection of healthcare and cybersecurity. The program offers members a deep dive into the latest cybersecurity trends and threats and provides ongoing education to help healthcare organizations safeguard against cyberattacks. Join the CloudWave Cybersecurity Insider Program for a webinar led by the FDA on April 25 at 2:00 pm ET. The session will provide an overview of the FDA’s recently updated medical device cybersecurity guidance to help healthcare organizations understand how they fit into a cybersecurity risk management strategy.
